Hello Zooites,
Sometimes I'm wondering where to ask some "silly" questions about astronomy, and on the other hand where to answer at some "silly" questions... According to astronomers, there are no "silly" questions. I agree of course. Nevertheless I know persons, adults and children, who don't ask certain questions, thinking they are "silly"... If it's just a lack of knowledge, it's not a problem. Here is the purpose of this topic !
Examples of questions ans replies :

Q : Why don't we see stars through the clouds with a telescope ?
R : Because the power of a telescope can't erase the fact that a cloud is opaque, and the light can't go through it, even with a powerful telescope.

Q : Why is it very dangerous to see the Sun directly with the eyes ?
R : Because retinae have no nerves, so if you have the sunlight on them, they "burn" because you feel nothing ! And you can go blind !! It's the pain that indicates at the body to stop a dangerous thing.

Et caetera... You can ask and reply if you think you have the right answer.
Let's go !! :)

Analysis Tips / Galaxy or nebula ??
« on: July 07, 2012, 07:17:42 pm »
We could probably make a whole thread with this habitual question...
Here it is :

Both NED and SIMBAD name this object galaxy (V Zw 369 for NED). For my own I see a nebula, not a galaxy... (moreover there is another nebula in the upper right corner)... What do you think ?

Analysis Tips / Faint and mysterious object

Am I alone to see here a very very faint object ? I am not sure it's noise.. Could be a dwarf galaxy ? Unfortunately NED and SIMBAD are mute...

Analysis Tips / Merger ??

Hello zooites !
Do you think that the stellar stream we see here is possibly a sign of a merger ?? If yes, a bit unsual IMHO...

Stunning sights! / The DDO catalogue
« on: January 05, 2012, 10:30:46 pm »
Here is a new catalogue here. It's a catalogue of dwarf galaxies. Unless error DDO means David Dunlap Observatory (David Dunlap was a lawyer who sponsorised the construction of this observatory - reflector 74 inches -, located in Ontario, Canada). Generally these galaxies are rather particular and beautiful (that's just my thought  :D).

Star space / Stars evolution... ?? ...
« on: January 01, 2012, 11:54:51 am »
Hello, I'm very confused to disturb on the first day of this new tear, but I have an old question in my brain about the stars evolution, looking at the HR diagram.
Here it is :

...in the left diagram we see that when the star leaves the main sequence reaching the giants sequence, and then the supergiants sequence, its way obviously goes a bit on the right of the diagram.. And doing that, the star seems to change its spectral type. In the exemple the star is G-type in the main sequence and turns into a K-type. Is it like that we have to conclude from this scheme ?? I previously had the notion that the spectral type of a star was stable during its life... Where is the right thought ?
Many thanks in advance for your lights on this existential question !!  ::) ;) :)
