What the heck is this? I've heard of the term 'double star'. Is that this?

I think this is a star in front of an elliptical galaxy ;) It gives a great perspective though !

Is this a young spiral galaxy in formation?

I still can't figure out how to include the picture in this posting. Can you please give me step by step instructions? Thanks.

I love this "Oddballs" category because it's the only way we newbies can learn and improve!

How to get the image in the page (you need multiple windows open in your browser):

Use this name:

http://casjobs.sdss.org/ImgCutoutDR6/getjpeg.aspx?ra=111.111&dec=55.555&scale=0.39612&opt=&width=512&height=512

inside the image tags, like this: (img)http...(/img) only use brackets instead of parentheses.

Then go to Galaxy Analysis, and click on the number of any galaxy (e.g. 58991234567890), which will take you to something like:

http://cas.sdss.org/astro/en/tools/explore/obj.asp?id=587732482197094621

Change the number to your desired galaxy.  Now click on the picture.  That will take you to a new window,

http://cas.sdss.org/astro/en/tools/chart/chart.asp?ra=137.18918335&dec=37.49270994

Aha!!!  Now you have the ra and dec numbers.  In fact, you can change them on the left.  Get it centered how you want it, then use those numbers to replace the old ones inside the (img) tags.  Painful the first time, no big deal after.

Here's my weird galaxy.  Approximately 1/4 of the outer edge is dark!  Hmmm, advanced civilizations using all the energy?  Anyone?  Eh, maybe it's just a funny cloud.

Anybody got any clues as to what this is?  It's like a triple elliptical or something...

another for the collection... and feel freee to post other pics here...

its a space cloud!  :D

This is a picture of a galaxy!  But we are too close.  Find this image and look at it on the SDSS page.  I'll bet you will be pleased.

*Noob Alert* How do I do that?

Hm, I don't see the original image ref # but when you click on the reference number in the analysis page, you will be taken to the SDSS page for the object. There, you can click on the small picture and will get a navigator window where you can zoom in and out and play with coordinates and such...

Here's a link to a zoomed out version I got by just manipulating the image URL:
http://skyservice.pha.jhu.edu/dr6/ImgCutout/getjpeg.aspx?ra=182.84402547294300000000&dec=50.26951969060080200000&scale=0.2&opt=&width=1000&height=1000&version=2

Irregular galaxy, put that under Star/Don't Know

I once got the following to classify (ObjId = 587725471205490852):

(No picture, just a black square with error message.)
Clicked "Star/Don't know" for obvious reasons, but I am curious what it really looks like...
