Only the IAU officially names astronomical objects. With the moon thing, basically there's an agreement that no country can lay claim to it. But some enterprising chappy decided that since that only applied to countries there wasn't anything stopping him laying claim to it and selling it off. Whether or not you think this would ever be upheld if there were any practical way to make use of said plots of land is perhaps more a matter of opinion.

IANAL and all that.
When I look up at the night sky and think about the billions of stars out there, I think to myself: I'm amazing. - Peter Serafinowicz

If IAU can't classify all the galaxies, how are they going to name them?   And, if they are going to be a long string of numbers with a few letters that isnt a name.    They are all our galaxies, lets name em!!!     I'm not suggesting the star registry scam, or selling real estate on the moon - I appreciate the comparison but it doesn't apply.

I think the classification app should include a name it field and a vote button.   When a galaxy comes up, you can name it or agree with the current name in the field.

The galaxy letters is such a great idea!!!

BTW, I classified about 100 just now, it was fun and its good to be back.   Hi everyone!

I don't know why, but I've gotten really attached to this galaxy...

Galaxy Ref: 587725551192703028

I'm going to name it...

Seba Hereret

Which means Star Flower in ancient Egyptian.
(Also, does anyone know what "Im?" means, in the NED classification).

'Ello, Fluffy  :D I wrote in another thread (no idea which, lol!) about how I've been doing my manager training which sucked up most of my time!
Is there anywhere that says what the letters mean? I keep looking up these classifications and have no idea what the letters mean!

I can't see it myself... *squints*

I call this one "The Kardia Galaxy" because the center makes me think of a heart. I don't know why.

If you thought that 111 plus 1 was 112, then you don't understand binary.
