Newsletter #3
« on: May 14, 2008, 06:23:25 pm »
You should all have received this by e-mail, but just in case you haven't, here's the latest from the Zookeepers!

Dear All,

It's been a busy couple of months for all of us on the Galaxy Zoo
team, so we thought we should write and keep you, our collaborators,
up to date. Work is continuing on Zoo 2, which will ask for more
detailed classifications of the brightest galaxies in Sloan. This
means more scientific data for us, and fewer fuzzy blobs for you.

In the meantime, could we ask for your help once again? The original
Galaxy Zoo classifications have produced a fantastic set of merging
galaxies. These are spectacular objects, but they're also of crucial
importance in galaxy formation, turning spirals into ellipticals, for
example. We're nearly ready to share the first results with you, but
first we need to make sure we have as many mergers as possible which
means checking through the likely candidates. You'll find instructions
on the front page at www.galaxyzoo.org.

The UK based members of the team are gathering in Oxford tomorrow,
15th May. If you'd like to keep up with what's going on, or view
videos after the event, please go to our Ustream account page at
www.ustream.tv/channel/galaxy-zoo from 10am (BST) tomorrow.

As well as developing Zoo 2 we've been busy with the analysis of the
data to which more than 125,000 of you contributed in the original
Galaxy Zoo. You can read about our first observing run, on top of Kitt
Peak in the Arizona desert, on the blog at www.galaxyzooblog.org . The
first two scientific papers are also online; if you don't mind reading
scientific jargon you can find them at http://arxiv.org/abs/0803.3247
and http://arxiv.org/abs/0804.4483 .

It's an incredible thrill to see your clicks turn into telescope
images and into scientific papers. Thanks for your help, and we hope
you'll enjoy the next stage of our exploration of the Universe.

Chris & the Galaxy Zoo team.

Thanks indeed Alice! Fuzzy blobs are so numerous... we like to see more pretty ones! (I know the fuzzies might be the prettiest if only we could get closer... but you know what I mean   ;) :D)

I haven't got one either yet (and I knew it was coming).  I know they are being sent out over time, and it is possible that those of us who joined later may get ours later.  It is also highly probable that the Spam filters have seen N thousand of these newsletters and have decided they are Spam and thus, those of us near the end will never see it.

I got the email. Just a little patience while the servers cope with them all.

Oh let me just a moment stay
where time is not and angels play the paeans of the galaxies;
then speed the stardust on its flight
to change dread darkness into light, cold chaos into ecstasy!
