The next question has to be what is a BPT diagram - Wiki fails me.

I discover on internet that BPT stay for Baldwin, Phillips, and Terlevich. Here i found an useful link.

Thanks for the research Half, that was interesting  :)

From the initial plots that Carie created, I'm a bit puzzled as to what they mean yet.... intriguing! I love this part of science where you're just sort of poking at something unknown.

Now you're talking about the scientist's motto, Kevin: The love of the unknown and the newly discovered! ;)

Good luck guys! It's great to see that you have something to get your teeth into, so to speak.
A quick explanation of 'fluxes' might well be welcomed.

Eric, I think the poking is part of it too.  ;) ;D

'fluxes' as in Carie's post ("GANDALF is a program which reads in the spectral data and carefully measures the flux in the emission lines.")?

I think, in this context, it simply means the energy per second per square cm per angstrom (or perhaps ... per square m per nm?).  The energy per second part is pretty obvious; the per unit wavelength is important because what's of interest (in research of this kind) is the spectral energy density, or distribution (as a function of either wavelength or frequency), or the power (energy per unit time) in one emission line vs another.  The per unit area is a bit more obscure, but this allows the fluxes of different objects, observed with different telescopes (etc), to be compared directly.

If you're interested, here is GANDALF's author's webpage with a direct reference to GANDALF.
Here is a wonderful astronomy discussion forum, and PhysicsForums is great for discussing physics (and for homework help)

And, of course, GANDALF is a piece of software which is indispensable in taming the data from an instrument known as SAURON. (Three syllables according to the mythopaeist; and no, I couldn't make this up).

For an example of astronomers getting even more out of hand with the Middle-Earth references, have a look at the abstract to this paper!

The basic idea is this: how much "energy" is a particular pea emitting in a particular emission like, such as the [OIII] line. We can measure the energy measured by the spectrograph by carefully fitting the line and disentangling it from the continuum other light. The relative strengths of these lines encodes information about what the hot gas in peas is like and in particular, what's heating it -- stars, active black holes etc...

Stay tuned till we know more and ask anything you want!  :)
