I've been in love with astronomy ever since I learnt how to spell Betelgeuse.  At, I think, the age of 7.

By the way, whatever happened to Betelgeuse; never seems to get a mention these days...

Hé, you're really lucky: there IS news about Betelgeuse. They've discovered and imaged a bow shock around Betelgeuse.  :o Here's the news and there's the picture:

Why, thank you, Adrianus, for that news of Betelgeuse.  I feel my life has come some sort of full circle, back home after 70 years adrift....

It gives me hope that I can escape the idiots of this world one day and find myself a new home, minus the idiots.

Standing on the beach, in the dark St. Tropez night and seeing all the myriad brilliant stars, hanging in the sky above the ocean, makes me remember why I love astronomy :) :)

Tom

Really ? You could see a dark sky in St-Tropez ?? Electricy on strike probably... Lucky you were !
 ;)

No electricity strikes, Alexandre, just not much light pollution around there at night (away from the main drag, of course  ;))

I have enjoyed astronomy since I was a young child and in my early teens I wanted to go into the profession, to be told that there was no future in it! So I decided to go into computing in the early 1970s, again to be told there is no future in it! I am now a Pharmacist, but I look at the sky and keep up with cosmological and other sciedntific developments when I can. I also encourage my daughter to be excited by any science and always look to the stars. l hope to study maths and cosmology when I retire!

Because, in the words of Oscar Wilde, ''We are all living in a gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars'' That is a great statement in a simple array of words. no matter how bad things get on any country on this planet, every politician, superstar and child will have then same stars above them(excluding hemispheres!) and it is those who look at the stars who can appreciate and learn from them. also it is very nice to think that what you are abserving, namely the universe, is unique from your point of veiw as a human( no one can physically prove that a certain star fusescarbon into oxygen but you can figure it out yourself)

I love astronomy simply because a) It's an output for all the thoughts that float around in my head, b) Because it helps you to realize just how puny we are compared to the rest of the Universe (Stop now, and think. Think...... ah-hah, it's breathtaking when you think about it, isn't it? Sure it is.) and c) Because it's just plain fascinating.

Hi ALL,

Simply put I love astronomy because of the inspirations it brings into my psyche and the profound hope that it offers to human beings. Plato sums it up neatly thus :- " Astronomy compels the soul to look up and think ." ( or words to that effect. )

I love it because it is fascinating and because it offers a window to look out at the wonderful things out there, also it gives you a change to stop and think about our inner self and realize that it's possible that each human has an universe inside himself or herself.  After all Astronomy is all about keep looking up, reaching for the stars, and never give up no matter what.

Hi, Daniel it was a good start. Even Galileo started with only two pieces of home made lenses. Keep up your interest and work hard. Stay around the ZOO and you'll learn a lot more. Who knows ? Your great break could be around the corner if you keep trying. On the other hand, you will never achieve your target if you don't try. :) :) :) Welcome to the ZOO ! ;D ;D ;D
