Posted by Hwilts in the newbies thread. Previously posted in ellipticals.

I would like some more light on this one, please.

I've seen quite a few very elliptically-appearing galaxies with dust lanes. Theory tells me ellipticals shouldn't have them. LOL just asking Kevin, he says maybe there's a small disk in there . . . ;D

Does that mean it is a lenticular galaxy?

Maybe it's an elliptical digesting a spiral?

Seems plausible to me.

I think there are quite a few of these too - I remember back in the old days (!) we found lots. Here's another. NGC 7722 587727223558766682

Would it be good idea to create a seperate thread for these ellipticals (or suspected ellipticals) with dust lanes?

Well, if you (we) find more, we can post them here and then maybe Tom* can have the title say something like "thingies with dustlanes" and then we have a topic for it. ;)

*Since Tom started the topic, he can edit the title. ;)

Thanks, Jules. Thats a good example. My thoughts on the galaxy in question are that it is SO, as well. My interest is why the glow seems to be going in the wrong direction, if you see what I mean.
