Why can't I see the object id?
« on: November 21, 2008, 10:50:42 AM »
In Zoo 1, when you click the galaxy's object ID, you get taken to the page associated with that galaxy by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, who provide all of our images. As many of you have noticed, that feature isn't available in the Beta test of Zoo 2, and this seems to have caused some unrest.

In fact, the ability to get more information when classifying is bad for our results, for we need to assume that all users are seeing the same thing when classifying. If some are using the redshift, or the spectrum or some other information then that's not a good thing.

However, we know a lot of the fun is in following up on objects that intrigue you, and so when the My Galaxies feature is added you'll be able to click through to Sloan's database directly.

I hope that makes sense, and thanks for bearing with us while we get My Galaxies online.

Sorry to butt in 'out of thread', but I'm still convinced that 'invert' and 'zoom' would be of great help. I appreciate your reasons for excluding id, but enabling us to get a better look at what are sometimes rather poor images would surely be beneficial.

If along comes another interesting object such as the Hannys Voorwerp, how are we to pass them forward for closer inspection?
Couldn't there be some sort of an GalaxyZoo's internal ID-number for the objects, that wouldn't actually give any external information of the body?

In the full version, you will get to see the Object ID once you have classified it! Also by marking it as "odd", that flags it up as something that should be looked at. You can send the team an e-mail with the reference number or post it here on this forum. :)

This is SO WRONG.
Not only is the ASPX webpage so hooribly slow that it can easily take two OR MORE minutes to classify just ONE galaxy, but now I can't get any reference number to an blue object at a galaxy, just because I forgot to mak it as oddity. OH GREAT!
Luskily I sabed the blue something on my harddrive, but I can't provide you with a reference number as that was not included in it :-(

Couldn't there be at least some reference to where it came from in the EXIF of the JPEG?

The curve of the blue tail would suggest a massive black hole sucking the blue flame ...perharps.

Okay, sorry, the image URL could be retrieved ONLY after proceeding to "View image" function and then copying the URL

Maybe I'm missing something but... I cannot find an "reference number" nor an ''object id''
When I have finished classifying a galaxy we simply move on to the next.

Please could you clarify.

Hi lordlucan,
ObjID/ref.number is'nt available in the beta version we're testing right now.
It will be in the "real" GZ2.
Hope this helps

Still it is possible to get an id number even in this version, albeit in a rather roundabout fashion. If you view the image you get;
http://skyservice.pha.jhu.edu/dr6/ImgCutout/getjpeg.aspx?ra=176.13293974400000000000&dec=30.73507238780000000000&scale=0.3202234574080188679245283014&opt=&width=424&height=423&version=

If you take this portion; ra=176.13293974400000000000&dec=30.73507238780000000000 and paste it in the sky server replacing the last bit in the url;

http://cas.sdss.org/astro/en/tools/explore/obj.asp?ra=167.23238&dec=0.44481

you get your id.

I understand why you would like "to assume that all users are seeing the same thing when classifying," but it's false, because it's based on the assumption that every computer monitor has the same resolution and color balance, which is not at all accurate.

From what I understand, we're not supposed to take color into account while classifying anyway.

I can't wait until the GZ2 My Galaxies feature is online.  I want badly to look up objects in the forums to find out more information, but I just don't have the time (or patience) to pick numbers out of the URL, etc. to get at the ID.

Hi, everyone.

SO... Am I to understand that we're not really rolling yet, and that what we're essentially doing, at this point, is practicing for when we ARE rolling?  That's fine (although it's frustrating not being able to check my facts with the more experienced zoo critters, especially after a two month layoff, as I'm rusty as the Titanic right now) , I just want to know what's what.  I won't stress too much about the rust if we're just practicing.  Otherwise, has anyone figured out a way for us to get help when we're unsure of an object?  Thanks.
