LaTex
« on: May 14, 2009, 02:01:52 am »
Greetings,

I would like to suggest that LaTex capabilities be incorporated within the forums.

A publicly available mod for SMF has been published:  http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1111

Best regards,
EigenState

There is even an online equation editor to facilitate use of LaTex:  http://thornahawk.unitedti.org/equationeditor/equationeditor.php

NB:  Javascripting must be enabled on your browser to use this editor.

It sounds like a good idea, but it's not something I can do immediately (due to going away for a few days) and it might be best to hold off until the login overhaul has been done as well.

You may find mathurl.com satisfies your needs somewhat - you should be able to hotlink in equations from it?

Just tried mathurl.  I could not get it to post an equation.

Anyway, no rush on implementing LaTex--I merely thought it would be a nice addition to some of the discussions, and much easier than trying to set any mathematical or chemical equations in BBCcode.

EDIT:  The mathurl images are png rather than jpg if that makes any difference.

I see there's a problem fixing the bg colour...

Well that's not *too* bad.

Not too bad at all.

So how exactly did you do it?  Mathurl link between image tags, or something more subtle?

Ooooh, can stuff like that be used on blogspot? It's driving me crazy, being a chemist without superscript and subscript on my blog. ;D

Greetings Alice,

It might well depend on what software platform your blog runs on.

Might find some useful information here:  LaTex FAQ.

Alice,

Have a look at Chemistry Teaching Resources (Software).

Lots of possibilities there, including 3D molecular structure graphics.

My pleasure Alice.

Do I get to know where I can find your blog so that I might learn some chemistry?

Best regards,
EigenState

PS.  I note that Edd did utilize mathurl to post that expression.  I failed in attempting that using the conventional link posted within the img brackets.  Most annoying!

Yes, used mathurl and just hotlinked the image after making the URL.

I had to wrap it in white colour tags - see http://mathurl.com/?o2r6ab and 'Edit this equation'. The antialiasing then gives it that overly thick look - ideally we'd change the background of a table in these posts to white and keep the black typeface, but I can't seem to get that to happen!

That was supposed to be an equation!   :D :D :D  Edd, I tried to follow your directions--obviously I am still doing something wrong.

Where did I leave my coffee?  ;)

You're copying the page URL, not the image url.

http://mathurl.com/?oqxjgr is a page
http://mathurl.com/?img=oqxjgr is the image
