I guess this is just noise but it does look odd.

I find the cores intensify in color in the stripe 82 images, making them look like stars or like very intense activity. All that color noise outside the galaxy boundaries interferes with seeing faint interaction and activity on a galaxy's periphery. I frankly don't see the value in viewing objects we can see already, although I can see the value for very faint objects we were having trouble imaging otherwise.

The noise is something of a cost for seeing faint details which you can see more of in these images. There's certainly value in this for several reasons, including that the extra faint detail can change classifications in some cases. It may be the parameters aren't ideal for some purposes though.

I've been getting a lot of error messages tonight, eg

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80004005'

[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

Something's up at the SDSS end. If it's not fixed shortly I'll drop them a mail - it's not something we have control of.

What Hanny said!  Also the quicklook link works fine, so I'm sure it's a quick fix for Arfon when he's back.

It was quick indeed!
