« on: October 20, 2009, 11:50:38 pm »
Following the kind message of RJN from APOD here, I am starting this thread for submissions and discussions of suggested images for the Galaxy Zoo APOD entry.

As RJN says they're interested in the Galactic Alphabet, I thought I'd put that to use, and also demonstrate what "zoo" really means. I'll do the complementary roll-over text thing tomorrow! :D

(In fact I might redo the whole thing - the M has come out really rubbish - I wish Powerpoint did blurring. I haven't got Photoshop or even Paint at the moment >:()

Actually, the old thread is also well worth a read - lots of cool ideas there - but Rick's mergers, which Kevin originally submitted, are still my favourite. Maybe APOD might like them now :P ;D

I also vote for Rick's mergers montage.

I also think Rick Nowell's Mergers are exquisite; an excellent potential submission.

Thanks, everyone!  The word "Zoo" spelled out in interacting galaxies above is really cool!  It is quite easy to read, too.  The first mergers picture created in Jan 2008 is nice for showing a gallery of interacting galaxies.   It almost appears to spell something, too, but if so I can't quite make it out.  - RJN

Sorry if i'm a bit late

Hi RJN
I was looking through to see what images i would nominate and it occurred to me how imaginative and artistic we all are, so i thought i would try to bring together the threads in an art index. (there could well be more) i thought you would find some of these threads very interesting, an insight into how creative we all are.  ;D

galaxy sky writing projects here here and here

Zooites space photography

Pure Art thread where we use the SDSS images to create little works of art

Rick’s mergers a really beautiful montage of mergers

This was created for the Zoo’s Birthday

Childrens art here and here

We have our very own Alexandre

You’ll also find threads for galaxies that look like faces flowers animals and aliens

I LOVE this image and it’s a very interesting project - Rick's peas. i would nominate this.

I like Alice's Welcome poster and especially Rick's Mergers better than either the Markarians or the Peas; I think pictures that imply meaning and/or action and/or energy will inspire a better response than collections of fairly static-looking galaxies, no matter how beautiful or significant.

Thanks for the nomination. In a way, the Green Peas should be the AUTOMATIC choice: surely a picture that reflects what
Citizen Science can do- discover a new class of galaxies! This montage showing 80 Green Peas begins to try and show
what an accomplishment it was; something that only Galaxy Zoo could have done, as it involved so many people's work
distilled down to those 80 Extremely Starforming Peas. Awesome!

On the other hand, the original Mergers picture is a one-off and reflects the enormity of the Mergers thread and the
vastness of the two recent Mergers papers that have ben accepted by the MNRAS for publication. It is a fluid picture,
but as it failed to be APOD when it was last submitted, I really can't say.
