Merger Zoo News - media, blogs and website mentions.
« on: January 08, 2010, 09:34:46 am »
Excuse me while I just pop a little note at the beginning of your post Geoff so I can introduce this thread.

When I merged the Topics Topic: Merger Zoo News - media, blogs and website mentions. With Geoff’s Topic: Galaxy Zoo merger project on the Institute of Physics website, PhysicsWorld. It popped Geoff’s post at the beginning of the thread instead of at the end.

So as an introduction, I started this thread for any news or mentions of the Merger Zoo project. Hopefully more articles will be written in time and when they are, here is a safe place to keep them. If you find any articles please add them to this thread. Thanks everyone.  ;)  ;D

Echo :)

GalaxyZoo in the news again! Galaxy Zoo Forum  8)  8)  8)  8) I'll post a translation if one turns up  ;)  :D

A while ago I was asked for an interview for 'Heelal', the periodical of the VVS (Vlaamse Vereniging voor Sterrenkunde = Flemish Astronomy Association) and here it is.
The interview was sometime in May/June so no mention of OldWeather or BubbleZoo  ;), but the guy who did the interview was very interested in the Mergers.

Galactic Mergers Fail to Feed Black Holes - Universe Today (with a reference to us, though if I understand right they asked a very different question from the ones we're asking here . . . I wonder if we'll look at the same thing, and if so, what we'll find?)

Alice, good find.

I like "blind study" aspect of this paper, if nothing else, for the novelty of applying it to Astronomy.  Merger Zoo is targeting major mergers in terms of the mass ratios of the galaxies, 1 to 1 up to say 3 to 1 or so.  However, not all of the orbits the volunteers have uncovered will lead to an actual merging of the two galaxies.  These interactions can still trigger loss of angular momentum of the gas in the galaxies, even without major distortions.  Of course this mechanism doesn't always get the matter into the very center of the galaxy.  So, the authors of this paper point out that additional "secular processes" may be needed in addition to minor interactions to explain AGN fueling.

Thanks for the link,
Anthony

A mention on the Wired Science blog: When Galaxies Collide: Beautiful Images of Cosmic Collisions

Mentions the merger project and has some great images.
