Now live news from Seattle on Hubble & Hanny's Voorwerp!
« on: March 18, 2010, 08:30:37 pm »
Just thought I'd announce here that on Twitter everywhere astropeople (including the official HST outreach person!) are buzzing about Hubble & Hanny's Voorwerp.

The first Hubble observations of IC2497/Hanny's Voorwerp are scheduled for the 4th of April! 8)

This just in - the second round of Hubble images just appeared on the observing schedule, April 12 from 1020-1300 UT. These use narrowband "ramp" filters on the Advanced Camera for Surveys to isolate emission from the gas in [O III] and H-alpha. I was starting to sweat these, because they showed up with only a single week-long window all year. Part of that came from the constraint that we wanted the long, rectangular field of view through these filters to include both Hanny's Voorwerp and IC 2497, which sets the roll angle of the telescope, and together with the need to have the solar arrays point at the Sun, that narrows down the possible timing.

Watched Hubble go by about a half hour ago. It gave me a nice bright reflection up to magnitude 0. I waved again; warmth and fuzziness ensued. Closest I've ever seen it to when it was taking data I had set up.
