photometric objects?
« on: May 10, 2010, 12:55:24 pm »
Within the parameters of an object, do photometric objects indicate star-forming clumps.  As in this image, 3 photometric objects are identified, I think they are star-forming clumps, are they?

Thanks, Geoff for fixing up my screwy URL.  I hate when that happens.  I'd really appreciate it if you could answer my question, "do photometric objects within a galaxy indicate the presence of star-forming clumps?  Thanks in advance?

As far as I know, the answer is yes, sometimes. You could ask "Do red things in the forest indicate flowers?" The answer being yes, often they do - but the red things might be birds, and flowers might not be red. Basically the camera latches onto various things that look interesting, and that might or might not be different galaxies. Often they do latch onto starforming clumps. Sometimes it's fairly random. And sometimes starforming clumps are there and they miss them. I hope that is a) correct and b) makes a little sense . . .

thanks to Alice.  One more thing. What is the definition of a 'photometric' object?  I've looked, but maybe in the wrong places.
Thanks, LL

I think it's basically somewhere that the camera has looked at directly, and therefore generated a reference number (and perhaps a spectrum, etc) for it.
