While observing the heavens one night
My telescope put up a fight
A Globular Cluster
Was all it could muster
But oh what a marvellous sight!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Brings to mind Edna St Vincent Millay's:

    My candle burns at both ends;
        It will not last the night;
    But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--
        It gives a lovely light!

Anyway, here's a limerick inspired by my meeting Hanny at the Greenwich picnic:

A newbie from Limburg called Hanny
(Inheriting brains from her granny)
On just her ninth dekko
Discovered an echo
Of light from a quasar — uncanny!

A white dwarf's an ominous thing,
It's a sun that has lost all its zing;
It grows cold, like a cinder
(Which nothing can hinder),
Till black as a raven's wing.

It takes billions and billions of years for a white dwarf to cool down, as shown by this embarrasing post by myself.

They are still really hot when we look at them.

A dwarf nova is a wonderous binary
That explodes in splendiferous finery
At regular spaces
It comes out of its stasis
And lights up the sky, all bright shinely.

Yes, but this limerick takes the really long-term view :D. After all, what's a few billion years to the truly cosmic observer ;D?

Lovely to see you here again, Tsering. I was beginning to feel lonely :(.

Here's my latest:

Keck maintenance work is not easy:
Mauna Kea in winter's quite breezy
And the climb to the top
Of a Keck téléscope
Can make you feel dreadfully queasy!

Anyway, here's a more time-focused version:

A white dwarf's an ominous thing,
It's a sun that has lost all its zing;
In a few billion years
It will cool (so one hears)
And be black as a raven's wing.

'Twould have to include a tribute to EPH:

Astronomy's Edwin P Hubble
Made clear to us (after much trouble)
That when all's said and done
Our galaxy's one
Of a host in a vast cosmic bubble.

There was a young spaceman from Ealing,
Who travelled by rocket when reading,
It said on the door,
"Please don't walk on the floor",
So he carefully walked on the ceiling.
"Sometimes I think we are alone in the universe and sometimes I think we are not. In either case, the idea is quite staggering. " - Arthur C Clarke

An over-keen zooite commuter,
So proud of his laptop computer,
Was fined heftily
For posting a pea
As he rode into work on his scooter.

A Jovian moon, some do say,
Was possibly viewed by Gan De*;
Ganymede or Callisto?
May both have been missed? Oh,
We'll never be sure, but they may.

*Gan De, Chinese astronomer, 4th century B.C.E.

A zooite residing near Warwick,
Who'd thought the name 'zoo' metaphoric,
Was dumbstruck (and scared)
When a tiger declared,
'With Stripe 82, I'm euphoric!'
