Visualizing Stripe 82 coadded images in Google Earth
« on: November 01, 2010, 12:27:06 PM »
We've all griped about the lack of a color navigation tool for the coadded color images from Stripe 82. Jiangang Hao and James Annis at Fermilab have provided a set of downloads and .kmz files to wander these data in Google Earth's sky mode. (I don't know yet how these color renditions compare with the Zoo 2 versions.)

::)  Thank you NGC3314 and Fermilab for this public link of downloads of stripe 82 going through more than a hundred of NGC and IC objects (108?).

Wonderful to take a tour and look at  M77 to  M2.

Very instructive to zoom in and out for an easier overlook of difficulties of image processing (stars spikes, satellite trails, mirrored anomalies such green M2 outcentered, etc... )

seems to me a little more reddish than in GZ2 with amplification on red stars  :)

Comparing NGC 1211 between GZ Hubble and gmbcg_coadd_public.kmz by Jiangang Hao (version 1) Fermilab

AHZ60003o0  8647474690891776303  588015508216086589
NGC 1211  ;  UGC 2545
in GZ Hubble (need to be rotated 90° left )  :D

in google sky : colors less soft , green noise ringed galaxy like red/orange noise around stars  :)

A goal of color rendering is to produce a pleasing image targeted at the intended reproduction medium and the customer preference.

My preference goes to GZ2 stripe82#2 improved version.

AHZ60005fk  8647474691426549887 588015508750794869
NGC 1094 ; UGC 2262 ;  Z 389-16  ; SAB(s)ab  / z(~) 0.021438
in group with
MCG+00-08-014 ; Z 389-17 ; 588015508750794944  / z(~) 0.021652

GZ2 improved version which eliminates all the multicoloured "noise" in the background of the original Stripe 82 pictures, the backgrounds of these images are speckled dark grey.

in Google sky ( gmbcg_coadd_public.kmz by Jiangang Hao (version 1) Fermilab) but  the backgrounds are speckled green.
