Paper with overlapping-galaxy catalog submitted!
« on: January 26, 2011, 02:35:15 pm »
I am very pleased to announce that we have just submitted the paper "Galaxy Zoo: A Catalogue of Overlapping Galaxy Pairs for Dust Studies" to Monthly Notices. The author list includes Half65 under his secret daytime identity, which is only fair because, in addition to contributing 30% of all entries in the overlap thread, he did a lot of work on scripts to retrieve and format data from the SDSS archive. The supporting data for this catalog, including PDF files with charts and other data for each object as well as Anna Manning's nice Javascript web listings (which are browser-sortable), are all linked from data.galaxyzoo.org/overlaps.html.

This marks only the fist of a series of publications which will be coming from this project - Anna is well along in analyzing our WIYN images and the corresponding GALEX ultraviolet data on the most informative overlaps, and I just started harvesting overlaps into a catalog from Hubble Zoo. The Hubble-SDSS comparison will give us a new way to trace the changes in dust content of galaxies over cosmic time (which connects to the star-formation history in both directions, fostering starbirth and produced by the late history and deaths of massive stars).

I was about to go on at more length, but email just arrived suggesting that I should blog it.

We just (a couple of days ago) got the referee's report from the journal, an extremely detailed review. One of the questions it raises is basically an organizational one, which requires a ruling from the journal editor for us to know how best to proceed. We should have that early this week.

This may be a good place for me to thank c_cld for very speedy work in finding new DR8 redshifts for objects in this catalog, which I initially expected to take much longer. This increased the sample of objects that could go into a Hubble snapshot proposal by about 15%.

Congratulations, Bill and all Zooites involved.  :) :) :)
