Sought: AGN with big companion galaxies
« on: January 16, 2012, 07:34:22 pm »
This is a short-timescale request - we're putting together a Hubble proposal and want to make sure we don't miss any targets that should have been obvious. The aim is to look for radiation from AGN ionizing gas in neighboring large galaxies, so we can trace the pattern of escaping radiation from obscuring material around the AGN core more completely than by relying on poorly known distributions of gas such as the AGN host's own tidal tails. Basically, we would like to know of any more objects like Markarian 177 (one of Stellar190's favorites, if I recall). More precisely, we want to know about pairs of galaxies with

- one spectroscopically classified Seyfert nucleus
- a large, close companion galaxy at matching z (within, say, +/-0.005); at z<0.1 or so
- which is blue and ideally spiral, not very disturbed by interaction if at all
- preferably known not to have a significant AGN of its own
- and ideally spanning a large angle around the AGN to have the best chance of intercepting its radiation.

The proposal deadline is pretty tight (one week), so we can't do a full search. However, experience leads me to think that among the assembled Zooites, some will remember galaxies that might fit these criteria and wouldn't be caught by an automated query. If one pops to mind, post it! (Again, the idea is to recollect systems you've already run into; looking randomly on this short notice is not likely to be very fruitful!)

Among our best cases so far are these two (the AGN is the little one in both pairs):

Mkn 177 = 587733081347063838 :

and Wasilewski 49 = 587741532253519915:

Here's the list we know of already, inside the SDSS footprint and out:
SDSS J011448.67-002946.0
SDSS J100534.70+392852.8
SDSS J101439.55-004951.2
SDSS J105222.48+180711.1
SDSS J142522.28+141126.5
SDSS J163208.09+455217.7

Mkn 177, 897.
NGC 3786, 5929, 5953, 7212.
Kazarian 163, 199.

It really is! It would make my year if this one got Hubbled too 8) 8) ;D ;D ;D

And this is going to make my time inbetween revision and coursework very interesting indeed, I like a good galaxy hunt!

Do you reject  Mrk 463 as outlier of your criteria ?
Mrk 463 -- Seyfert 2 Galaxy
UGC 8850 ; UGC 08850 ; MRK 0463
essential notes:  •see also Mrk 463E and Mrk 463W, double nuclei G
Morphology: Merger;Sy1     Sy2

this is the result from a purely visual inspection of the Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN)....Found an AGN? Post it here! thread.
Just an aside, but this is one of the most difficult 'hunts' ever !  ;)
