For what use is the "Other" Option?
« on: February 21, 2013, 08:42:53 am »
When asked "Is there something odd?", there is the Option "Other".
I wonder, what "Other" can stand for? For what reasons do classifiers click "Other"? How often did we click "Other"?
Does the GZ Team follow up the "Other" clicks? If so how? ( "Other" can mean anything.)
Does it make sense to click the "Other" option? Or is it just a waste to click "Other"?

I click other when none of the other options fit.
But I think I've used it maybe t3 or 4 times.

Here are some ideas, for what "Other" stands for.:
- a bright nucleus: possible AGN
- voorwerpje candidate
- overlap
- edge-ons with x-shaped bulges

Any other ideas?

In the current GZ Zoo I mainly use the "Other" option for SDSS images, which have a blank part (#blankpart).

BTW, the question "Is there anything odd?", when classifying Hubble images in the current GZ however isn't asked! (As far as I remember, this was discussed in GZ Talk and/or on the GZ forum before. I will try to find the discussion/s and post the link/s. Does anyone else remember?) If it was asked, I would use the "Other" option for pixelated images, though it isn't actually odd, because there are lots of those. Someone had done a suggestion for a button for "pixelated images".: http://www.galaxyzooforum.org/index.php?topic=280427.0

I use it when there's something I think is weird but it doesn't seem to match any of the categories offered - merger or dust lane or whatever.

I use this option primarily to indicate overlaps, and in particular the overlapping/merging galaxies that are often seen at the center of rich clusters. Interestingly, I haven't had any 'center of rich cluster' SDSS object to classify for some time now ...

I have also sometimes used it to indicate ETGs which appear asymmetrical, because, to me 'Disturbed' is an inappropriate description (just because an ETG seems asymmetrical doesn't mean it's 'disturbed'!).

Also, if it's a poor quality image - for whatever reason - but not so poor that I can't at least attempt a classification (in those cases I choose 'Star or Artifact' at the top level), I sometimes add "other". This is particularly the case where there seems to be a slight mis-registration, resulting in odd colors patterns (e.g. an ETG with something that looks vaguely like a dustlane, but is just - most likely - a color imbalance).

I may also, sometimes, have used this when the object to be classified was not clear; I'd have a go at classifying what I thought was the intended object, but "other odd" means "but this may not be right object!"

There are probably other (  ::) ) cases, that I don't remember just now ...

Early-type galaxy, "elliptical", but it includes lenticulars, which can - sometimes - be almost impossible to tell from ellipticals (just by looking).

I wonder, how often the button "Other" was clicked for "Fake" AGN images ?
