How to Translate Galaxy Zoo
« on: May 04, 2013, 12:38:03 pm »
That's the title of the latest GZ blog post, by ttfnrob (a.k.a. Robert Simpson).

For zooites who are keen on languages, or those whose preferred language is not English, it's brimming with good news!  ;D

Now, how do you say "Is the galaxy simply smooth and rounded, with no sign of a disk?" in Thai?  ???

กาแล็คซี่เป็นเพียงเรียบและโค้งมนที่มีสัญลักษณ์ของดิสก์หรือไม่
Kā læ̆kh sī̀ pĕn pheīyng reīyb læa không mn thī̀ mī s̄ạỵlạks̄ʹṇ̒ k̄hxng dis̄k̒ h̄rụ̄x mị̀

Sorry -couldn't resist :-)

I'll take your word for it, Mjtbarrett!  ;)

Here's an interesting question: suppose, as ttfnrob says, it's only the front-end to the classification engine which gets to be done in 中文 (简体字)*, while Talk remains in English. Suppose someone in China finds an object and they'd like to discuss it; they click the 是 button, and leave this terse comment: #蓝色. How is any of the GZ Science Team going to know that this goes in the same bucket as those with the hashtag #blue?

* Chinese, written in 'simplified' characters

How would they know that they have to use # in the first place !  :D
Over on GZ Talk people sometimes post in Spanish or even Russian. I use Google translate to see what they are posting and answer them in English.

Oh, that's an easy one to answer. We know - from Karen's GZ blog post - A Bit More on the Chinese News about Galaxy Zoo - that there's strong interest in GZ in China. So, once the 中文 (简体字) version of GZ is up and running, the classifications will start pouring in. And, by word of mouth (or perhaps a lengthy article in 天文爱好者 (Amateur Astronomer), which includes a description of hashtags), active GZ zooites in China learn that tagging things with hashtags greatly helps the Science Team.

I've noticed that, and I'm deeply impressed by your enthusiasm and dedication! While it's much better than it used to be, I suspect that using Google Translate for short phrases, in Chinese, relating to galaxies and how to classify them, will produce some, um, strange results!  :D Of course, it's possible that GZ Talk (中文 (简体字) version) will be picked up by Google Translate, and fed into its giant statistical engine, to produce much better translations; yet another contribution of the Zooniverse.

Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days.

I noticed today, that there are 2 other language options available.:
Español = Spanish and besides Chinese, I guess

As I informed before, there is also a Spanish option available, but I wonder, if it is really correct? Are there any native Spanish speakers on the forum?
I checked by using google translate.:

GZ       : Is the galaxy simply smooth and rounded, with no sign of a disk?
google: Es la galaxia simplemente liso y redondeado, y no hay indicios de un disco?

GZ      :  La galaxia es de forma simple, lisa y redondeada, sin indicios de un disco?
google: The galaxy is simple, smooth and rounded, with no evidence of a disc?

The google translation (from English to Spanish) sounds like the original question (English).
When translating the GZ Spanish question, it is different than the original question in English.

Google translate is very useful in quickly translating things. But it is by no means 100% reliable.
