Missing DR7 images
« on: May 05, 2013, 07:09:41 pm »
Perhaps this is old news, but today I discovered that some (perhaps all?) SDSS DR7 images are no longer accessible. For examples scroll down at http://www.galaxyzooforum.org/index.php?topic=272654.1470 and you will see that not only are six of the images missing, but each includes the notice that it is outside the SDSS footprint.

Does anyone know anything about this? And if SDSS has taken DR7 off-line, is anyone trying to do something about it? I think it would be a shame and a loss if those images are permanently missing.  Could SDSS be persuaded to put DR7 back on line, perhaps on a slower server? Or could Galaxy Zoo put the DR7 date up on its own server?

:( I think there is a bug in the sdss system. These have happen before. As far as I can tell DR7 is working.  Not all of the DR7 pictures are missing just a select few. Might have something to do with trying to get the DR8 Screen up, the screen, I guess you would say defaults to DR9 :-\.  I suppose someone will have to e-mail the help desk, of course its Sunday and they are probably closed. It is not a problem the zoo can fix. :(

They are still missing. Is this a permanent thing? It would be much work to update everything to dr9.

I think it may be Chris Snyder, who appears in one of the photos from the Sydney conference. Or perhaps Ed Padget (sp?), who is also there.

Is there a quick way to change images from dr7 to dr10?

It's a real shame, isn't it?

Not that I know of  :'(

At least, not unless you already have a table, or list, of (RA, Dec) coordinates for the objects; if you have that (or something like it), you can use one of a couple of SDSS tools to produce new, DR10, images en masse. It may be possible to extract a list of coordinates, from your post/GZ forum webpage(s); didn't waveney develop such a tool/technique?

Thank you, Jean

Well, I guess I should start looking up coordinates.

Do you think I should use dr10?

Does it make any difference whether I use Chrome, IE or Firefox?

Is the forum going to be revamped/ unplugged?

Right.

A list of coordinates - together with their DR7 and DR8/9 ObjIds (be sure that these are 'text' not 'number'!) - is well worth compiling, if you think you'll be using your images (etc) in future. Once you have such a list, it's relatively straight-forward to use it get all kinds of data (and images!) from SDSS.

It's a real shame gumbosea is no longer around; he would surely be able to write simple code to make your task much easier ...

Quote
Do you think I should use dr10?

Either DR9 or DR10, I don't think it matters (though I vaguely remember finding it hard to get ObjIds in DR10; the DR9 ones are the same as DR8s, which are completely different from the DR7 ones)

Quote

I can't really help you with that; I use Firefox for everything except some general searches (and I now use DuckDuckGo rather than Google), because I've found Firefox easier to use and is more stable.

I certainly hope not!  :o Or at least, if it's to be revamped, I hope is done in a way that doesn't mess up the formatting ...

...
Hi Budgieye,
The "out memory" error is not permanent but appears more frequently in Stripe 82 or DR6 than DR7.

DR10 has the same objid than DR8/DR9 with a revamp of image processing and more spectra.

If you want to update some posts, you could edit links of images by replacing
http://casjobs.sdss.org/ImgCutoutDR7/getjpeg.aspx?ra=...
by
http://skyserver.sdss3.org/dr10/en/tools/chart/image.aspx?ra=...

If you want to find the DR8/9/10 objid it's easy to query the table PhotoObjDR7 or PhotoPrimaryDR7 with a list of DR7 objids in http://skyserver.sdss3.org/dr10/en/tools/chart/listinfo.aspx  or http://skyserver.sdss3.org/public/en/tools/search/sql.aspx

There is no difference in using Chrome or IE for SDSS tools.

Cheers
c_cld

Thank you again Jean. The out of memory seems to be a permanent thing now?

I'll use dr10, on the assumption that a bigger number is better.

Thank you c_cld, I don't know how you got those co-ordinates so quickly.
Was it hard work? or software?
I inserted some of the co-ordinates in the dr10 query box, clicked on one of the images and the Object Explorer in dr10 came up in the next tab, then I magnified and cropped the image in Finding Chart.
