The Zooniverse blog post Anyone Fancy an Asteroid? mentions this, and in the comments you'll see that several other zooites are not happy with the project.

Quote from 'about the project':
"In addition to these lifelines, asteroids provide the raw material for manufacturing in space, from iron, nickel and cobalt
present in staggering quantities, to an abundant supply of the extremely useful and valuable platinum group metals".

Anyone who takes part in asteroid zoo will be given shares in whatever mining companies are set up to extract these
metals. Yeah, right...

I am rather astonished about the co-operation of the Zooniverse with a company!!!
Interestingly, investors (Planetary Resources, Inc.) include Google's chief executive Larry Page and its
executive chairman Eric Schmidt according to the wikipedia article "Asteroid mining". :

Is that the same Google who donated $1.8 million to Zooniverse?

I guess, that this is just a wish!

I guess, that your question is rhetorical.

Jean informed in her post about the blog post "Anyone Fancy an Asteroid". It is dated 27 June 2013. It was a pre-announcement of the project. So after one year it is available as announced in the new blog post.
The blog post about the google price for the Zooniverse, namely "Google confirms that the Zooniverse is awesome!" is dated 12 Dec 2013.
So the Zooniverse received the grant from google after the co-operation between the Zooniverse and the company Planetary Resources (formerly known as Arkyd Astronaut) had been agreed.

ZK Chris had stated in the blog post* about the google price following.:
Quote
PS: Just to be clear, this is a philanthropic act from Google- (...)

Subsequently to the above statement he wrote following.:
Quote
(...) we’ll continue to be an academic project run by the team at Oxford, Adler Planetarium and elsewhere and all your data remains with the Zooniverse as before. Nothing changes, except our ability to scale!"
Well, the Asteroid Zoo isn't just an academic project run by the Zooniverse, but a private company is involved and so it is likewise a commercial project, isn't it?

Right. Just to inform you guys that these last few messages have been reported by two other users. People are concerned about the negative speculations. As a mod, I'll allow it (for now) as you're entitled to your own opinions of course. I will let the team know though.

As Hanny I'd like to suggest (again) that maybe as a general guideline you should participate in things you like and agree with and not participate in things you dislike or disagree with. Personally I don't see any point in these complaints. It is not your project or your call. Enough others apparently disagree with you, which is what is keeping it going and that's important. It is what it is and you can't change it. Just your own view and actions. Carpe diem. ;)

It is okay on my side, that you are going to inform the science team about my posts! I am not worried/annoyed about it.

I see differences of opinion expressed here Hanny. There are no libellous comments just well reasoned views and opinions. You are challenging Freedom of Speech. I suggest you desist.

I am not and I resent that accusation. In the future, I suggest you express your views as your views and not as facts. To explain (again): the bit you quoted was, in fact, my personal opinion. Freedom of speech is for everybody, including me.

The bit you didn't quote (in blue) explained that although the posts had been reported by other users, I as a mod am allowing them, because - and I quote myself here:

[...] as you're entitled to your own opinions of course. [...]

Please note that the above suggestion is a request from the team and as a mod I am expected to take actions when users ignore our requests. And with that, I also ask everybody in this thread to get back on topic and reread your messages before you post them.

Have a nice day! :)

Finally, there is the announcement of the ZooCon/s !:

Copy from the Daily Zooniverse:
Quote
(...)ZooCon is our annual conference where we invite our volunteers to join with us and here about our various projects and what we have planned for the future. This year it will take place on Saturday 2nd August in Oxford. (...)

I am also happy to announce a separate ZooCon event for Zooniverse volunteers in Portsmouth. It will take place on Saturday 13th September (...)

http://daily.zooniverse.org/2014/07/01/zoocon-2014/

In the above statement there is given "here about". I guess, that he actually means "hear about"!

For the event in Portsmouth there is a preliminary schedule available on the webpage for the booking of the free tickets.:

10.00-10.30am: Arrive, socialise (with coffee)

10.30-11.30 am:  Talks: What's new in the Zoo... and what's the plan for the day...

11.30-12.30pm: Wikiathon to improve coverage of Citizen Science on Wikipedia

12.30-2.00pm: Lunch (time to walk to Gunwharf/Dockyard if nice weather)

2.00-3.30pm: More wikiathon/astrodome sessions (TBC)

3.30-4.00pm: Feedback and closing of the day

Sorry, but I didn't understand, what you mean.:
Concerning "above suggestion is a request from the team": I wonder, to which suggestion/request you refer?
Concerning "take actions when users ignore our requests." : I wonder, to which actions/requests you refer?
Am I not allowed to reply to your below (personal) comment?
On one hand, you had written "as you're entitled to your own opinions of course"*, but on the other hand you wrote "take actions when users ignore our requests" and asked everybody to get back on topic.
Besides I wonder, why you did following statement? : "reread your messages before you post them. "

Yes, you can ask these questions when you don't understand what I said. So to answer your other questions:

I marked the suggestion you're asking about (as well as your question) in red, to make it more clear.

Actions mods can and are expected to take when requests are ignored have always been and still are (for instance): taking posts off and/or ban users.

And lastly, I asked to reread your messages before posting them as I want to urge people to think and only post sensible, constructive messages.

EDIT:

As I explained, some of these posts have been reported to us. This forum is for all of us. Personally and as a mod, I didn't see the need to take the messages off (yet), but I warned everyone that they have been reported. Maybe you could finish that convo outside of the public area.

I trust you understand my previous point now. I don't think even I as a teacher can be more clear than this. So this is also the last time I'm going to respond to this issue (in public). Please get back on topic and don't make me lock this thread. ;)

It might be an idea to start a separate Zooniverse thread, for topics relating to Zooniverse jobs etc., as this thread was just for the Chicago Team Meeting, which finished some time ago, so could possibly be locked.

Well, I don't think, that it is time to lock this topic (actually it should never be locked), because I am still waiting for information.:

I sent a PM in Talk to GZ astronomer Brooke aka vrooje and received below reply. She gave permission to make her PM public here.

And I suspect everyone will be hearing more about some of the things we discussed (though I don't know exactly when).

Well we'll be the judge of that :P ;)

But no, this:

is never a reason for a lock. Just FYI. :)
