There are on record only three well defined spiral galaxies that have three legs
NGC145 UGC 3014 and ARP 21 a rare creature indeed
NED search does not reveal this as one of these

could this be one?  Maybe not as well-defined.  (How do you define well-defined?)

Here is one with three legs, but the picture is too fuzzy to be called well defined.
I need a higher resolution picture to be certain of that third leg.

aka, NGC234 appears to have 3 to me...
If only time didn't take so long ... we'd be there by now

Elizabeth, here is the link to the earlier three-legged spiral. http://www.galaxyzooforum.org/index.php?topic=2983.0
I remembered it as I posted that I thought it could be the symbol of the Isle of Man Astronomical Society, and someone else named it I.O.M. galaxy 1. You commented too.

There are on record only three well defined spiral galaxies that have three legs
NGC145 UGC 3014 and ARP 21 a rare creature indeed
Ok, courtesy of DarkPenguin in
http://www.galaxyzooforum.org/index.php?topic=7969.0
and following the link to the sim and then to the applet, enter 180 on all 4 dials (I don't know what they mean) (but it's ok because I have no choice:  those dials don't work with iMacs >:() (not the first time I see java applets that don't >:() (but at least this one works with iMacs)  (mostly) >:(

In any case -my tantrum is now done with ;D-, now enter 1 and 40 in the two boxes and press "start".  A few million years later :o the galaxy takes a triangular shape:  one arm distorted and the other spread into two, and that may be like the one that started this thread, with the left arm split into two.

So that might have been a close call after all!

Can I get my medal now? ::)

(note:  the sim is 2d but it is, given the circumstances...  perfect.  The java programmers, on the other hand...)

It works on my iMac (and it's ooooold).  Mine is running OS X, it's one of the old 500MHz, 32mb ram (although it's been upgraded to 1 gig via 2x512's).  What browser are you using?
The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education.
