Tell the Galaxy Zoo story - "remix" our poster!
« on: January 28, 2008, 11:23:42 pm »
Here is the place to post your thoughts, ideas, and creations!

Instructions, copied over from the blog:

A couple weeks ago, Chris and I attended the meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Austin, Texas. At the end of the meeting, I uploaded the poster I had presented there:

In a comment to that post, mushroom made a fascinating suggestion:

Could be a fun visual communication exercise to try to make another poster which conveys the same information without using any text.

This is a fascinating idea. I talked it over with the team, and we’re not sure how to go about telling the Galaxy Zoo story without text. But we’re sure that with your creativity, someone can figure it out! And, to phrase mushroom’s suggestion in a different, more general way:

How would you tell the story of Galaxy Zoo?

Here is your chance. We invite you to “remix” the Galaxy Zoo poster, telling the story of Galaxy Zoo in your own words and images. You can start from the original work, or strike out on your own. Head over to the blog to get the original poster as a JPG or Word file.

If any of you are wise in the ways of Photoshop, E-mail me, and I can send you the original Photoshop CS2 file.

We’re really looking forward to seeing what you come up with, and we hope this is fun for you too!

Have fun, and keep telling the story!

Details

You may change anything you want about the poster, as long as you leave the following elements. You may move them around, but you should maintain them visibly on the poster:

1) The author names and institutions (”TeamMembers” in the Word file). This is in the standard format for scientific posters and papers.

2) The names of the volunteers, which now appear at the end of the poster. But, of course, feel free to add your own name to our randomly-chosen list!

3) The logos of the institutions involved with Galaxy Zoo.

4) The copyright statement, including the Creative Commons logo.

Thanks Elizabeth  ;D Sorry for the delayed reply.
As I hadn't heard back from any of the zoo team assumed it wasn't to anyones taste  ::)  :D - I'm aware how busy the guys are so not especially surprised really.

Enjoyed the redesign challenge immensely - looked at it again last night and would probably change a few things but generally happy with my contribution.

Just a thought - I sent my poster redo to Jordan but we had a clash of e-mail clients and I ended up having to post it on a website for him to pick up. The attachment on my original e-mail to him didn't open so he'd no idea I had attached my poster and it was only when I mailed him again that we realised the problem. Once he'd picked up the poster from the website it made it's way to the blog.  ;D ;D

Maybe you have a similar problem Bunny. Do you use Outlook? I'd love to see your version.

Hi Jules  :D

I'm a little confused! The poster must be on the network somewhere because of the fact that elizabeth has seen it...
Do any of the zoo team have a clue as to what's happening please?

Also, Jules, I'm using Safari if that helps answer your question.

Where would I display the poster for you to see it?

I'd imagine you could probably attach it (thats in the additional options menu).

There is that, but - hah, great coincidence, as I've just sent you a PM, Bunny - not everyone can see uploaded files, like JPEGs. Would it be suitable to put on Photobucket? I could host it if you want me to . . .

Hi - Alice

Yes please - could you let me know what I need to do...

Please don't get too excited folks! I'm starting to get a complex now  :-[ :-[
I'm happy with the current version but would alter some text formating if I had time... It wont be to everyone's taste - such is the with art!!

Hi Bunny,

You could set yourself up a Photobucket account. Also, I must stress, it depends how huge the poster is. If it's not very big, you're welcome to e-mail it to me (at my private address, not through a PM). If it is larger - well, Jules's, and the original, seem to have been put on some special shrinkable JPEGs, and we can always ask zookeeper_Phil or someone how that's done. :)
